Those scientist types have been very active of late, between making ethanol fuel from orange peel and now tree-derived sugar being used to make plastic. Who’ll be first to make trees from fuel? The latter project is being worked on at the Imperial College of London , and unlike plastic made from corn it’s looking like these tree and grass-derived molecules actually biodegrade faster and are better for the environment. In the next five years we should be seeing plastic made from sugar on the market—whether it’s the work of this particular project or someone else, it’ll still benefit everyone. You’d be right in having doubts over how much more expensive it would be to produce, but at least it’d use less energy, and hopefully over time become cheaper the more it’s adopted. [ Telegraph ]

Cheryl Cole performed at the BRIT Awards last night (16.02.10) without her wedding ring. The 26-year-old singer left her £160,000 diamond-encrusted band at home as she performed an energetic version of ‘Fight for This Love’ at London’s Earls Court – the first time she has been seen in public since revelations of her husband Ashley Cole’s alleged affair emerged.

Russia Today (RT) is a state-owned satellite channel that appears to have had a large input of cash recently. If you live in London you may have seen their huge – and hugely irritating – billboard adverts. There’s one with the faces of Obama and Ahmadinejad superimposed on each other, with the question: “Who poses the greater nuclear threat?” followed by the logo:

IF this were a just society, the executives of FirstGroup would be paraded in chains on the concourse at St Pancras. Because it is modern Britain, however, they get to go to the Rail Business Awards. And what a big night it was, down at the London Hilton! First was named Rail Business of the Year.

Yes, that’s exactly what it looks like — a robot that can look at a human face and make a pretty reasonable sketch of it. Featured at London’s Kinetica art fair last week, the Aikon 2 project boasts an “inexpensive” robot arm and software developed by a research team at Goldsmiths University of London. As you might have guessed, building a device with rudimentary artistic ability is no mean feat — leading the developers to try and understand and simulate the processes by which artists sketch the human face, including: visual perception of the subject and the sketch, drawing gestures, cognitive activity, reasoning, and the influence of training. The project’s website emphasizes that “due to knowledge and technological limitations the implementation of each process will remain coarse and approximate.” In other words, the robot “is expected to draw in its own style.” Which is, quite frankly, better than we can do. We look forward to seeing these things in the cafes of the future, where robots not only fetch us drinks but chat up girls with offers to draw their portraits. Video after the break. Lindsay Lohan was seen leaving the Bungalow 8 nightclub in London late last night with some friends. What do you think about her grey faux (?) fur jacket? Amy Winehouse has given away her 11 cats. The ‘Rehab’ singer – who flew out to Jamaica to work on her much-anticipated third album earlier this week – has given two of her beloved pets to goddaughter Dionne Bromfield and called an animal shelter asking them to pick up the others from her London home.

Police were called to George Michael’s house after he went missing in the middle of the night. The ‘Careless Whisper’ singer wandered off from his property in north London, leaving the front door to his £5 million mansion wide open – prompting a security guard to call the police in the early hours of Tuesday morning (09.02.10).
